Scholarships, education loans and forex — what actually pays for a degree abroad

A plain-language guide to the funding routes students combine, and the order to approach them in.

Most students use more than one source

It is rare for a single scholarship to cover a degree abroad. What usually happens is a combination: a partial tuition scholarship, an education loan for the rest, family savings for living costs, and a forex plan that keeps the transfer cost down.

Scholarships

Institutional scholarships — awarded by the university itself — are the most winnable, because the pool is smaller than for national schemes. Many are automatic on your grades; some need a separate application with its own, earlier deadline.

Education loans

Indian banks and NBFCs lend against either collateral or a co-applicant's income. Rates, margin money and the moratorium period differ enough that it is worth comparing three or four offers rather than taking the first sanction.

Your loan sanction letter also does double duty: it is often the cleanest way to show proof of funds in a visa application.

Forex

Tuition transferred at a poor rate can quietly cost more than a semester's books. Compare the rate and the fees together, and ask what the bank charges for a university's specific payment channel.

Rules and figures change. We check every detail against the current published source for your destination before you act on it — if anything here matters to your plan, ask us and we will confirm it.
